Bernini, painter, sculptor and Italian architect from the first half of the 17th century, was the greatest artist of his time. He worked for many years for Rome and for many popes, including Gregory XV. Indeed it was for Pope Gregory that he sculpted a marble bust, of which this cast would be a replica. However, the most recent studies seem to prove that this was a first specimen, chiselled by the sculptor, and destined for a leading Roman collector. Therefore, science has enabled this work to pass from “second-ranking sculpture” to “first-class work”.
