Tintoretto or Pathetic Realism

In this lecture, Marc de Launay invites us to discover a lesser-known aspect of Tintoretto’s work. Beyond the monumental decorative cycles created for Venice’s confraternities, he focuses on Tintoretto as a portraitist and as a subtle, sometimes ironic interpreter of biblical narratives and Greco-Roman traditions.

Marc de Launay places the painter’s work within the political, religious, and cultural context of the sixteenth century, shaped in particular by the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church’s response, and the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. Against this backdrop of tension and upheaval, Tintoretto remained rooted in the Christian tradition while developing a distinctive approach, different from that of contemporaries such as Titian and Veronese.

Through an analysis of several works, including Danaë, Leda, Susanna and the Elders, The Adoration of the Shepherds, and Tintoretto’s Self-Portrait, Marc de Launay shows how the painter goes beyond the mere illustration of traditional narratives. Through movement, composition, and the transformation of pictorial conventions, Tintoretto asserts a personal vision: the painter thus emerges as an author in his own right, recognizable through the singularity of his artistic vision.
